Reflections from Professor Robinson's research on a Sufi Muslim Women's Movement in Niger and the beginning of MAMA KYOTA
On October 25th, 2017 Tisch College of Civic Life presented Saïda Oumulkhairy Niasse the distinguished Global Humanitarian Citizen Award.
Known by her followers as “Mama Kiota,” Oumoulkhairy Niasse is the leader of a Sufi Muslim women’s movement, the Association des Femnmes Musulmanes Jamiyat Nassirat Dine (the JND), a multi-ethnic, transnational, overwhelmingly rural African women’s association with nearly 100 chapters in Niger over 200,000 members across West Africa.
A tireless advocate for women’s rights, education, and peace, Mama Kiota has spent more than 50 mentoring female leaders, and promoting religious tolerance, and establishing schools such as her Franco-Arab Lycée that is now attended by approximately 1,200 elementary students.
This site is dedicated to honoring the life and works of Mama Kiota as told through the research of Pearl Robinson.
